Way back in the day, before the concept of “social media” was even rattling around in anyone’s head, the main way to get an audience online was simple…have a website. (And honestly, it wasn’t that hard to do.)
That was it. That was your shot. If you wanted people to find what you had to say, you either paid for advertising, hoped Google would send you a miracle, or you just sat there quietly waiting for visitors to discover you one by one.
The internet was just one massive neighbourhood of websites. Some were small family-run blogs with questionable colours and flashing GIFs… and others were polished corporate machines. But still — it was all websites.
To be discovered, people used search engines. Your website had to be Search Engine Optimised so Google would even consider suggesting it to someone based on your keywords and descriptions.
Back then, my websites used to get found. Quite a lot, in fact. But over the years, attitudes changed, web hosting changed, things just changed and somewhere along the way, I headed in other directions and let them all slide into oblivion…
I went into involuntary ghost mode. Vanished. Disconnected. And honestly — that was fine for a while.
But it’s time to come back. Because it’s become exciting again…
Then Facebook Kicked Down the Door
Facebook didn’t arrive politely, it changed the entire game. Suddenly, you didn’t need web design skills. You didn’t need hosting. You didn’t need to know what “HTML” stood for. All you needed was a profile picture and a thought and BOOM, you could share it with people instantly.
And for years, people forgot about websites. Facebook gave everyone a voice… and an audience… overnight.
But Then Reality Hit…
Fast forward to today and Facebook is still a powerhouse, no question about it. The attention is there. The conversations are there. The opportunities are there.
But there’s a problem… a BIG one:
You don’t own anything on Facebook.
Your posts. Your audience. Even your account are all controlled by someone else.
One algorithm change and you might be gone.
One random restriction and you might be as good as gone.
One misunderstood comment and more than likely, you’ll be gone.
Just like that, everything you built can disappear in an instant. And I’ve seen it happen to folks I personally know and it’s not a nice thing at all.
So Websites Made a Comeback (Big Time)
The smart marketers figured something out:
Facebook builds attention. Websites build assets.
Your Facebook profile is your front porch. It’s where people meet you.
But your website? That’s your home. It’s where people come to understand who you really are and what you believe in.
On your website:
- You control the message
- You can collect leads
- You build trust
- You can build a brand that lasts
The Real Strategy: Facebook + Website Together
Most people think they have to choose, social media or a website.
I say, Yeah Nah!
The real power is in using both together:
✅ Facebook creates curiosity and connection
✅ Your website deepens trust
✅ Your email list turns followers into customers
This isn’t theory, it’s the exact system I’m building right now and sharing step by step.
What’s Coming Next
In my next post I’ll show you exactly how I’m setting up my Facebook profile as a “Comfy, welcoming place to come and visit” and not a billboard. You’ll see how the right structure, story and content can attract the right people into your world without looking spammy or desperate.
So stick around, this is going to be good. I’m not sure who is more excited… Me or You… Hopefully both of us… Now it’s time to get to it.
I am an avid Website developer and Affiliate Marketer.
I created my First Website back in 2001 using Frontpage (yes that old…) which quickly led me into Hand coding HTML and CSS.
So over time I got a bit handy with custom PHP scripts and MySQL Database Design and not forgetting javascript.
So, If you ever have any questions – except for “what are the winning lotto numbers” I will do my best to help when I can.
